By: Damon Winter
In this text, photographer Damon Winter explains pictures he took of personal items that are important to the people without a home. Winter traveled to areas of homelessness and asked them if they carry an item with them that makes wherever they are staying feel more like home. Answers included a pocketknife, a mug, a mermaid sculpture, and even a bulldog. Winter included photos of each of these items as well as an explanation of why they are important to the people who carry them. The author shares how he feels extremely fortunate after this experience, which allows the reader to be thankful for what they have as well. The author makes a key point about homelessness and how home for them is just a singular item, rather than a roof over their head. This text makes the reader consider the privileges they have, one lady talked about how one of the most important things to her is running water, a luxury that many of us have without even thinking about it. The biggest influence of the text is the pictures included, as it makes it more real to see the specific item and gives the reader a more impactful image in their head. This mentor text illustrates an interactive way readers can engage with this text by including the images and basing the writing off them.
